PETER SCHMELZER was born in Graz, Austria; achieved his musical studies and finished them with the state diploma at the Music-University-Graz (Austria) in violin, piano and conducting.In 1987 he studied with Leonard Bernstein at the occasion of the International Schleswig - Holstein - Music - Festival (Germany). After various engagements at German and Austrian opera houses he runs his career as a free lance conductor since 1990; he cooperated with eminent European orchestras like

The president of the Federal Republic of Austria, Dr. Thomas KLESTIL, appointed him as
PROFESSOR OF MUSIC
He was invited to conduct in most important Festivals like Festival International de Musica Contemporanea Alicante, International Guitar Festival Moscow, St. Petersburg etc.Besides his competence in the historical and traditional repertoire on the symphonic and opera fields, his particular interest belongs to the performance of 20th century repertoire and - particularly - to the contemporary music. His collaboration with some most eminent composers of the present time result various occasions for premieres and performances of numerous remarkable compositions. Amongst others there ranged works by Vaclav Kucera, Udo Zimmermann, Carlos Cruz de Castrao, Antonio Ruiz Pipo, Xavier Benguerel, Tomas Marco, Delfin Colome, Mikhail Shukh.

Since 2017 he is permanent guest conductor of the Bavarian Classics Orchestra.
